In 1054 the Christian church divided into two parts: The Roman Catholic Church which influenced center and western Europe, while the Eastern Ortodox Church covered Eastern Europe and the Middle East. (This date is important because from one religion two big churches formed and they changed in a very different way, and this two churches still controls the religious life in Europe nowadays.) -

Battle of Hastings
This was the final big battle between the Normans led by William the Conqueror and the Anglo-Saxons led by Harold Godwinson. The Anglo-saxons were defeated in the battle, thei king died as well, so William could conquer the british island. He made a strong central power which resulted the that England became one of the strongest countries in the world. On the picture we can see the Bayeux Tapestry. -

Creation of the Dictatus Papae
Gregory VII published the Dictatus Papae which is one of the most important document of the Medieval ages. It records the power need of the church and it proclaimed the supermacy of the popes over the emperors or kings of Europe. -

The first Crusade campaign
This is the first year of the first crusade campaign which was followed by 7 more campaigns. The aim was to recapture the Holy land, which was succesful, but the Islamis people started the Jihad against Europe, as a revenge. -

Concordat of Worms
In this year Henry V and pope Callixtus II made a peace treaty. Owing to this document there were no conflict between the world leaders and the church. This also meant the end of the investiture fights. -

The Fall of the Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire which kept the Roman heritage and controlled eastern Europe and the Middle East fell and it gave opportunity to other states to form. -

The discovery of America
1492 is the year when Chris Colombus discovered America. This year indicates the end of the Medieval ages.
