Texas Admitted to the Union
Texas was admitted to the United States of America on December 29, 1845, which angered Mexico, who had lost Texas in 1836. -
US Tried to Buy Land (Slidell and Polk)
President Polk wanted to buy california and Texas from Mexico, so he sent John Slidell to meet with the Mexicans and negotiate, but the Mexicans refused to meet with sidel as they didn't want to sell their land. -
US Troops Staioned at Disputed Border
President Polk sent US Troops to the Mexican border, which he claimed was Rio Grande, in a show of force, which upset the Mexicans because they claimed the national border was Nueces River and that the US had entered Mexican land. -
US Declares War
Outraged by the apparent trespassing of their lands, the Mexicans attacked the US Troops and killed 16 men, which Polk claimed was grounds for a war, as, according the Americans, the Mexicans had killed Americans on American soil. -

The Battle of Resaca de la Palma was one of the earlier battles of the Mexican-American war, in which the Mexicans almost won, but surprise attacks by Charles A. May, enabled an American victory. -
Mexico City Surrendered
General Winfield Scott seiged Veracruz, a major port city of Mexico, and then marched on to Mexico City, where he split up his troops, using a few as a decoy to reveal the location of the Mexicans, and surprised them with the remaining troops, winning the war. -
Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo
The Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo not only ended the war, but ceded upper California and New Mexico to the United States for 15 million dollars, officially declared Texas as part of the US, and ensured the safety of existing property rights of Mexican citizens who were living in the ceded territories.
