12th anniversary of Bloody Sunday
More than 140,000 strike in commemoration of the 12th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. Bloody Sunday happened in 1905 and was when unarmed, peaceful demonstrators were shot at by the military. Their aim was to get to the winter palace to present a petition to Tsar (King) Nicholas II of Russia. -
Strikes over food shortages
More than 100,000 workers are still on strike and the Duma attacked the government by saying it was due to food shortages which they had still not fixed. -
International Women's day 1917
On International Women's day, demonstrators and striking workers, most of them women, took to the streets protesting against food shortages caused by poor leadership, and the war. -
Tsar Nicholas hands succession on to his Brother
Tsar Nicholas attempted to re-enter St Petersburg by train but his path was blocked. He was forced to give up the throne so he tried to hand succession on to his brother but he refused it and a provisional government is formed. -
America Declares war on Germany
On April 2 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress (the Senate and the House of Representatives) for a declaration of war against Germany, then, on April 6, Congress granted the request and the United States was formally at war with Germany. -
Lenin returns from exile
Lenin returned from exile on a sealed train heading for Petrograd. It started in Switzerland before passing through Finland and Germany. -
April Theses
When Lenin returned to Petrograd he made a rallying speech called the April Theses and it help gain support for overthrowing the government. -
Greece entered the war
Greece entered the war on the side of the Allies. -
Lvov resigns as leader and Lenin goes into hiding
During the time of 16-20 of July 1917, a series of anti-government protests and demonstrations occur and Lvov resigns as leader of the Provisional Government. Alexander Kerensky takes over and crushes the Demonstrations.
Kerensky then issues arrest of Lenin, who then goes into hiding. -
The Kornilov Affair
The Bolshevik Party's Red Guards were armed by the provisional government to defend against General Kornilov. They saved the city from military dictatorship from Kornilov but then Kerensky realised his main opposition was ready and armed for a revolution. -
The November Revolution
On November the seventh the Bolsheviks take over Petrograd and then move on towards the winter palace. -
The fall of the Provisional Government
The Bolsheviks took over the last stronghold of the Provisional Government, the Council of People's Commissars (the new government formed) is now led by Lenin, who in turn is now the leader of Russia.
