The governmet gave "homesteaders" 160 acres for a fee of 12$ and if they could improve on the land (farm it) within five years. this gave homes and land to many people. One problem is that large companies bought the land then re-sold it for a high price. -

the railroad united east and west and made tarvel easier. It made shipping easier. The railway was viewed as a bad thing for some though. Farmers hated the railways because they made them lose money that they barely had. High prices for shipping and low prices for grain destroyed some farmers finances. The railways also help create the era of the cowboys. -
Chivington Massacre
the importance of this event is that it made the native americans dislike the Americans more. This is a dark mark in our history because Cnl. Chivington and his men killed many women and children. This was one of the many battles with the native americans in the west. -

The Cattle Kingdom
This is the combination of the many cattle drives from Texas and other states to get to the Transcontinental Railway. This is the time of the cowboy. Cows were sent up to the railroads due to the high demand for beef products. The era of cattle drives was stopped by the creation of barbed wire. -
Barbed Wire Invented
Barbed wire started the end of the cattle drive era. It was made to keep people and animals out. This also made defined land areas. The invention of barbed wire has changed the world, being used in war, boundry markers, and used in prisons. -
Battle of Little Bighorn
General Custer and his men were sent to investigate the Native Americans ghost dance. The Americans thought it was a war dance when it was actually a dance to bring back how they lived without the white men in their lives. Custer and all of his men died in this battle. -
Wounded Knee
Colonel James Forsyth and his men were sent to go disarm the Lakota on one of the reservations. A shot was fired causeing the 7th calvery to open fire on the tribes encampment. men, women, and children were killed in battle, causing it to be a massacre. This also made the natives unhappy with the Americans.
