Cecilius, George Calvert son, was issued a charter from King Charles the first. He named the colony Maryland in honor of England Queen. -
Colonists journeyed to Maryland
200 English Catholics came to Maryland in a group that included wealthy land owners, servants, crafts people, and farmers. The new colonists from England learned ways from the previous settlers of Jamestown and eventually learned to grow tobacco for profit. -

Protestants began to move to Maryland. As a Catholic founded colony presumably tensions rose. To reduce these high rising tensions Lord Baltimore released a bill to help. -
Toleration act of 1649
A bill that helped reduce the tensions in Maryland because of the religious dispute. This bill, passed eventually by the colonial assembly, made it a crime to resist the religious rights of Christians. -
Slavery allowed by law in Maryland
In 1664, Maryland passed a law making lifelong servitude for black slaves mandatory to prevent them from taking advantage of legal precedents established in England that granted freedom under certain conditions, such as the conversion to Christianity. -
