Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat
Under the Jim Crow laws of segregation, the first 10 rows of a bus were reserved for white people. If those rows filled up and another white person got on the bus, the people sitting in the next two rows had to give up their seat. Rosa refused to do this. This was the beginning of the civil rights movement. For a year after this event, African Americans boycotted the bus system in Montgomery, Al. This was a significant non-violent way to get their message of equal rights for all heard. -
Visits with Gandhi
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's success with non-violent activism, King Jr goes to visit Gandhi in India. -
"I Have a Dream" Speech
In the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., more than 200,000 people came together to here the eloquent Martin Luther King Jr speak. His words and vision became know as the "I Have a Dream" speech that would eventually lead to equal rights for all Americans. -
