The Organizations that banded together to create the March on Washington of 1963
Multiple civil rights organizations worked together to organize one of the most famous events of the Civil Rights Era - the March on Washington. Attracting over 200,000 people - this March (specifically noted for Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech) was a tremendous success. -
The NAACP
The NAACP, also known as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, was founded on February 12, 1909. This organization and its leader Roy Wilkins, played a major role in organizing the famous Civil Rights Era event known as the March on Washington. This organization was originally founded to suppress any violence targeted specifically at African Americans. -
The National Urban League
The National Urban League, founded on September 29, 1910, and its leader Whitney Young Jr. also helped with organizing the March on Washington. This organization was originally founded to encourage economic and social justice for black Americans, and to put an end to racial discrimination. -
The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters
The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (founded in 1925) and its leader A. Philip Randolph, played a minor role in efforts to organize the March on Washington, but a role, nonetheless. This organization was originally founded to be the first labor union to provide African Americans with "membership" from the American Federation of Labor. -
The CORE
The CORE, also known as the Congress of Racial Equality (founded in 1942) and its leader James Farmer played an important part in organizing the March on Washington. This organization was founded to encourage white and black Americans to get along through working together on various projects. -
The SCLC
The SCLC also known as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (founded on January 10, 1957) and its famous leader Martin Luther King Jr. had the greatest role in organizing the March on Washington. This organization was originally founded for the purpose of creating change for all black Americans through peaceful protests. -
The SNCC
The SNCC also known as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (founded in April 1960) and its leader John Lewis, played a crucial part in organizing the March on Washington. This organization was originally founded for the purpose of leading campaigns against racism. -
The March on Washington of 1963
On August 28, 1963, over 200,000 people from multiple organizations (such as the NAACP) rallied together in Washington, D.C. to peacefully protest an end to segregation, and advocate for fair wages, and true civil rights.
