Date of Birth
Mao Zedong was born on December 26, 1893 in Shaoshon, China to Mao Yichang and Wen Qimei. His Father was a Chinese rice farmer and merchant. He was known as the Master of Abacus. His mother Wen married Yichang at the age of 17 when he was 14. She had 2 miscarriages. Wen was concerned for his health and went to nuns take care of him but they refused because he appeared perfectly healthy. Mao Zedong then grew up in a privileged and spoiled life. The long March
In 1934, the KMT leader Chiang Kai-Shek attacks the Communists. 87,000 soliders retreat to Hunan from Jiangxi. By 1939 Mao gains control of the Red Armys Retreat. 6,000 miles were marched in extreme weather. Less then 10,000 men survived. Source (Fritz 6) -

Peoples Republic of China
In 1949 Mao Announced publicly that he is now the chairman of 4.9 million members. These included workers, peasants, lower-middle class,and national capitalists. They were 90% peasants. It was a Peoples democratic dictatorship. Source (Bio.com editors) -
Korean War
By 1950 Mao was already the chairman of the P.R.C. Mao traveled to Russia on October 1st to make a treaty with Stalin. Before they could profit the Korean-war broke out. Moscow set up a regime North Korea in support they had to help them. Source (Reynolds) -
Invasion of Tibet
In 1950 Zedong tried to negotiate with Dalai Lama but it was denied. He claimed that that Tibet had been poisoned by Religion. Overall 10,000 people were killed during the invasion. 87,00 were killed in resistance. 250,000 Tibetans were put into prison or labor camps where they were treated horribly. Source (Hays) -
First 5 Year Plan
In 1953 Mao wanted to boost production. He produced more steel, iron and coal in China. This led to the 100 flowers campaign. And overall the plan was a succession. Source (bio.com Editors) -
The Hundred Flower Campaign
In 1956 Mao created a 6 week period where he encouraged criticism of the CCP to help the five year plan succeed. He felt threatened by the criticism, 300.000 people who did it were considered to be rightists. Source (Bio.com editors) -
Famine and the Great leap forward
In 1958 partly workers for the communist part had little incentive to work under such harsh weather conditions. As well there was severe food shortages during the great leap forward. Due to this 55 million people starved to death. Source (Wakin 126) -

Celtics Win 7th Straight NBA Championship
In the 1963-64 season the Celtics won their 7th straight Championship. They played the Lakers under their new head coach Red Auerbach. Also Bill Russell played with an eye injury and got 30 rebounds. Cultural Revolution
In 1966 Mao wanted to change China back to communism. He thought that younger educated people were supporters of the old ways. Zedong created something named the Red Guard. Members of the the guard wore uniforms known as khaki. He told them "to rebel is justified" and to knock down the old; the old being The nationalist party. In 1973 Billly Jean King created the WTA. It's main purpose was to organize woman's tennis tournaments. It the beginning of woman's tennis there were only 9 players. -
Date of Death
Mao Zedong Died on September 9, 1976 in Beijing, China. Mao's last greatest public success was his meting with Nixon to create a closer relation ship to the United States. Mao started to make less public appearances. He had sufferd effects of Parkinson's. When he died he still held the Position of chairman of the communist party of China. -
'Battle of the Sexes'
In 1973 as exhibition match in tennis the number 1 men player Bobby Riggs and the number 1 woman's tennis player Billy Jean King would play each other. This would be know as the Battle of the Sexes.
