  • Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand

    A Serbian nationalist killed Archduke Ferdinand, so Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia in response.

  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

    This was officially the beginning of WWI

  • Battle of the Marne

    French defeat Germans and thwart German attempts at a quick victory on the Western Front. This battle also first began using trench warfare

  • The Race to the Sea

    After the Battle of Marne, both sides were fighting to take over each other's northern flanks until they both reached the coast of Belgium.

  • Sinking of RMS Lusitania

    Germany sunk the Lusitania, which held over 100 American passengers. Anti-German semitent began building in America.

  • Germany resumes Unrestricted Submarine Warfare (USW)

    Germany continues sinking American ships, pushing Americans to join the war.

  • Treaty of Brest-Litovsk

    Germany forced Russia to surrender and withdraw from the war.

    This was the final major German offensive.

    An Alled offensive on Germany that forced the Germans to surrender.

  • Armistice ends hostilities
