The Northwest territories joined the confederation in 1870. The Northwest Territories joined because the Hudson Bay Company, which owned those lands, sold them to the Canadian Government. Manitoba was included in those lands.The Northwest territories also joined for the railway Canada offered -

Prince Edward Island joined after confederation when they were bailed out of finacial woes incurred durring the buliding of its own railway -

Yukon joined Canada because they had realized the need for a local government created because of the population increase by the Gold Rush.
When the Gold Rush happened, they needed a local government to control all the chaos happening, and they couldn't remain such a big part of the Northwest Territories so they became a single province. -

Canada promised to help them by building many things such as roads and railways.Britain didn't want the cost of supporting Newfoundland any more. Joining Canada would mean more money for Newfoundland. -

Nunavut was split off from the NW Territory in 1999 to give the Inuit a territory in which they would be the ethnic majority.
