Major Events and Acts of The American Revolution

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The British Parliament taxed foreign refined sugar, coffee, indigo, specific wines, etc. They put a 3 cent tax on refined sugar, and banned rum and certain french wines. The colonists protested against this, while the British imposed.
  • Currency Act

    Currency Act
    The British Parliament passed this act so they could control the colonial currency system. This act banned colonists from printing their own paper money. The colonists deemed the act unfair, and started a petition. On the other hand the British merchants started to get uncomfortable with the act.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act imposed taxes on the Colonies on printed paper. The colonists protested against the act, "No taxation without representation." While the British passed the act to help pay the British troops.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    The Quartering Act was passed by the British to accommodate and British Soldier and provide them with housing, which meant the colonists also had to serve them hand and foot because of the act. The colonists disputed, because they thought that it violated the Bill of Rights. When the British officers that had served thought that it would be hard to convince the colonists to pay for their stuff.

    The Declaratory Act stated that the British's taxing was the same in America as in Great Britain. The colonists didn't really care they were too busy celebrating over the repeal of the Stamp Act.

    4 acts passed by the British Parliament. The British tried to exert authority over the colonists. The Colonists were very angry with the act.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre started when British soldiers opened fire and started a fight. The colonists were anything but happy from the outcome. On the other hand the British ended all Townshend taxes except the taxes that were on tea.
  • Tea Act

    The Tea Act was passed by the British Parliament. This act imposed taxes on British Tea. The colonists were very mad and never accepted this act. This act further lead to the Boston Tea Party.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party occurred on 3 different British ships. The colonists did not want to pay taxes on the British Tea, so they dumped all the tea. The British shut down the Boston Harbor until all the tea was paid for.

    The Boston Port Act was established by the British, so that they could regain all their debts because of the previous Boston Tea Party. The act was passed so that Boston would have to pay Britain back for all their tea. The colonies all came together with Boston and it shocked Great Britain.

    The Quebec Act was passed by the British so that, they could institute an administration in Canada. The colonists thought of this act as another intolerable act.

    The 1st Continental Congress was when delegates from 12 of the 13 colonies held a meeting. The colonists gained up on the soldiers, and the soldiers shot them.
  • Edenton Tea Party

    51 women in Edenton had decided to boycott English imports, to support the first Provincial Congress.The colonists boycotted British tea and cloth after September of 1774.
  • Ride of Paul Revere

    Paul Revere is famous for warning the colonists that the red coats were coming. He was a Boston Patriot. The British departed. Revere arranged to have one lantern lit to signal if they came on land, and two lanterns lit if they came by sea.

    The shot heard around the world marks the battle of Lexington and Concord. The first shots were right after dawn. Nobody knows which side fired the first shot. Everyone that day was shocked.

    The Declaration of Independence was when the colonies declared independence from the British rule. They British declared the colonies as a state of rebellion, the British were concerned with the colonies.

    Thomas Paine published his pamphlet, known as "Common Sense." The pamphlet is stating that the colonists want independence from Great Britain. The colonists were convinced by Paine's moving words and decided that it was time to break off from Great Britain.
