General Ulysses S. Grant wins in Kentucky and Tennessee
Grant helped secure the lower Tennessee river. The victories drove the Confederates out of Kentucky, where the South had tried to persuade Kentuckians to secede to the Confederacy. -
The Monitor vs. The Merrimack
Southerners turned the Merrimack into an ironclad ship and renamed it the virginia. The North had an ironclad of its own, the Monitor. Neither ship was able to sink the other, but the Union succeeded in making the South keep the Merrimack in harbor. This marked a new age in Naval warfare- the fist battle between twon metal-covered ships. -
The Battle of Shiloh
Over 20,000 casualties altogether. General Ulysses S. Grant beat General Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard. -
Naval Forces Under David Farragut capture New Orleans.
The Confederates can no longer ship their goods out to sea. Since New Orleans was at the Mouth of the Mississippi river, the Union had gained control of almost all of the Mississippi river. -
Union defeat at Richmond
General McClellan refused to act fast, so the Confederates got reinforcements in Richmond. The Union lost. -
The 2nd battle of Bull Run
Stonewall Jackson prevented the Union's Major General John Pope from getting to Richmond and reinforcing General McClellan. The Confederates won the battle. While this was happening, General Robert E. Lee and his troops were 20 miles from Wsahington, D.C. -
The Battle of Antietam
The single bloodiest day of the entire civil war- 23000 casualties altogether. The Union Army of the East, called the army of the Potomac finally gained some confidence. McClellan (kind of) won but he didn't pursue the Confederates, so Lincoln replaced him with Ambrose Burnside. -
The Battle of Fredericksburg
The Union lost so badly that General Ambrose Burnside quit and was replaced by General Joseph Hooker. -
Chancellorsville
The Confederates won but it cost many casualties including General Stonewall Jackson. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
Befoore, General Hooker was replaced with General George Meade. The 2 sides met on this day, fought for three days, and finally, on the last Confederate attempt to win, Pickett's charge, the Union shot them down and declared victory. -
A turning point in the war
With the Confederate surrender at Port Hudson and Vicksburg, the Union had control of the entire Mississippi river. Vicksburg and Gettysburg marked a turning point of the war. -

The Final Stages of the War
The beginning of the end was when the Union captured Chattanooga. Then, Lincoln appointed Grant as head of all Union armies. David Farragut captured mobile bay so that the Union would now control the Gulf of Mexico. General Sherman had captured Atlanta in November 15 after General Sheridan had driven the confederate troops out of the Shenandoah Valley in October of 1864, following Grant's plan. These victories paved the way for Lincoln to win his reelection in 1864. -

The Siege of Petersberg
Grant couldn't capture Richmond, so he attacked Petersberg, a major railroad junction. If it fell, then Richmond would be isolated from the rest of the confederacy. The attack turned into a nine month siege. Lee finally surrendered on April 2. Richmond fell the same day. Not wanting Union hands to get ahold of Richmond, the government officials set fire to most of the city and fled. -
Sherman's March to the sea
Sheman and his troops destroyed everything from Atlanta, Georgia to Svannah Georgia, cutting paths of destruction some 50 miles wide. -
Surrender at Appomattox
Lee couldn't escape from Petersberg so he had to surrender to Grant in a small town in Virginia called Appomattox Court House.
Grant had generous terms- he made them lay down their arms but let them keep their horses to return home and live their lives. The civil war was finally over.
