The March on Washington
There were more than 200000 people who came to Washington to march peacefully including musicians, religious leaders, and famous people. The march was supposed to draw in national attention on Kennedy’s bill of rights. Martin Luther King Jr., gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. The march was successful, but Kennedy’s civil rights bill remained stalled in Congress. -
The Selma March
The march was intended to bring attention to the issue of voting rights. Leaders organized marchers to walk from Selma to Montgomery. Acts of violence were created during the start of the march. -
The Voting Rights Act of 1965
This act allowed federal officials to register voters in places where local officials were preventing African Americans from registering. It also eliminated many barriers to voting. -
The Watts Riots
The riots took place in an African American neighborhood in L.A. A young black man was arrested for drunk driving in the neighborhood. The Watts riots caused deaths, and many injured. -
The Kerner Commission
The commission was established by President Johnson to investigate the causes of the race riots that had been happening in the U.S. They used this to provide help for future riots. -
Dr. King Assassination
Martin Luther King Jr. was shot while mobilizing support for the Poor People’s campaign. It made violent riots in many cities.
