    The Vikings took the monks by surprise and attacked from the sea. The assailants dug up the altar and stole the church's treasures, a later source tells us. They killed some of the monks and stripped others naked. Many drowned in the sea. Some, including children, were chained to their ships, perhaps for ransom, perhaps to be sold into slavery.
