U.S detains Arar
Returning home to Montreal from a vacation in Tunisia, Arar and his family had a stopover in New York City en route. During this time the US belived that Arar was a terrorist. The US government detained Maher Arar and held him in custody for two weeks. -
Deported back to Syria
At this time he was deported back to Syria and was being tourchered under the alligations of being a member of al-Qaeda,During this time Arar was transferred to a prison. In this prison he was beaten for several hours and forced to falsely confess that he had attended an Al Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan. He was tourcher for one year. -
Released from prison in Syria
Arar was relesed from prison because the Syrian government could not find any terrorist links. The Syrian government also denied that they tourhered Arar in prison. -
Renturn to Canada
After one year of torcher Arar finally returns home to Canada to be with his wife and two children. He sues the Syria and the US government for tourchering him. -
Recived compensation
The Canadian government agreed to pay Arar almost $10 million Dollors for damages.
