    On May 7th 1915, RMS Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat. The Lusitania was going from New York to Liverpool when a German submarine fired without warning. Because the Lusitania sank it pushed the U.S. to join WWI after saying they were going to stay neutral.

    The battle of Verdun was the longest battle during WWI, Fought from Febuary 21st 1916 to December 18th 1916. The battle took place in the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse in france
  • The Zimmermann Telegram

    The Zimmermann Telegram
    The Zimmerman Telegram was a message from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German embassy in Mexico. The telegram was coded so that other countries couldn't read it but British cryptographers cracked the code and it revealed that Germany had promised U.S. territory if they fought along with Germany.

    Because Germany used unrestricted submarine attacks on passenger and merchant ships the U.S. Senate voted in support of the measure to declare war on Germany. The Zimmerman Telegram in 1917 and the Lusitania being sunk earlier in 1915 took part in the decision making process. Many people did not want the U.S. to join the first world war due to the fear of over militarization, that the large army would threaten american democracy, and that the large army would menace other countries.

Women took WWI as an opportunity to show that they were capable of the same things men were. because women had to step into men's jobs a wave of global suffrage in the wake of the war. During WWI the U.S. saw a systematic mobilization of the country's entire population and economy to produce the soldiers, food supplies, ammunition and money necessary to win the war.

    The Fourteen Points were a political goal of the U.S. to keep as much peace as possible instead of punishment to who lost the war. Written by President Woodrow Wilson and presented before congress on January 8th 1918, the 14 points outlined Wilson's plan to end the war and keep peace.
