Background Beginning of the war in general
The Vietnam War timeline is an extremely complex political and military issue and France was their colonial system over Vietnam including Tonkin, Annam, Cochin China, and Cambodia. Laos is later added in 1893. Then September 1940: Japanese troops invade the French occupying Vietnam with little French resistance. Not too long after 1945 japan had been defeated and France begins to reassert its authority over Vietnam. -

The Viet war started on November 1 of 1955. Then in March of 1974, a new policy had been made in which the united states assist any country who is threatened by communism, this is known as the Truman Doctrine. June 1950: The United States, identifying the Viet Minh as a Communist threat, steps up military assistance to France for their operations against the Viet Minh. -

Middle of the vietnam war with the US
In January of 1968, the Tet offensive begins with a combined assault of the north Veit and Viet Minh, their attacks shock the US, and a new turning part in the war-making the US started to remove itself from the war. Then February 11-17, 1968: This week records the highest number of U.S. soldier deaths during the war, with 543 American deaths. The Nixon administration had used Vietnamization making it so the US troops in Viet are reduced from a peak of 549,000 to 69,000. -
End of service
During his service in Vietnam, He lost of life on March 21, 1971, in south Vietnam. Ernest is forever honored at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington DC for his service and we are very thankful for all the soldiers on that wall.
