Loyalist Migration

  • Before the beginning

    Before the beginning of the revolution, many events took place which led to the main event: The American Revolution. British soldiers killed five men. This was knows as the "Boston Massacre". Months later, the Boston tea party occurred. A few people poured tea down into the Boston Harbour.
  • Taxing

    Many people were beginning to get tired of being taxed by the British government, as their earnings would decrease by great amounts. These people decided to go against the British government and protest. They were called the Patriots. The people in favour of the British government, and against the Patriots were called the Loyalists, since they stayed loyal to their country. People on neither side were neutral.
  • Period: to

    The beginning

    April 19th 1775 is the date when the American revolution began. The patriots were at war with Loyalists and Britain. Patriots didn't receive much support but yet they were abusing Loyalists and kept protesting against Britain.
  • The ending

    The American Revolution ended on September 3rd 1783. The patriots had won and had gained independence of what is now the United States. Some Loyalists had already started to flee Britain before the war even ended.
  • Fleeing

    Since the Patriots had won, the Loyalists were either forced to leave or they flee on their own because of the violence and the situation. They migrated to different parts in Canada, such as: Ontario, Nova Scotia, Quebec and other parts as well. As many as 30,000 loyalists fled to Canada.
