Discovery of Louisiana
In the winter of 1681-1682, the French explorer Rene Robert Cavalier, Sieur de la Salle, led an expedition from Canada down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. La Salle reached the river's outlet to the gulf, where he set up a cross and a wooden post carved with the coat of arms of his king, Louis XIV. In the presence of a handful of followers, the thirty-nine-year old explorer claimed the entire Mississippi water for France, and named the new territory "Louisiana." -

Spain takes over Louisiana
In 1762, France ceded the Isle of Orleans and all of Louisiana west of the Mississippi to Spain in the Treaty of Fontainebleau. Because the treaty was signed in secrecy, Spain did not take over Louisiana until 1766. -
