A fair-haired boy lowers himself down some rocks toward a lagoon on a beach. At the lagoon, he encounters another boy who wears thicks glasses and is chubby. The fair-haired boy introduces himself as Ralph and the chubby one introduces himself as Piggy.

They discover a large pink cream-colored conch shell. Piggy realizes it could be used as a makeshift trumpet. He then convinces Ralph to blow through the shell to find the other boys.

Once Ralph blows the conch, a group of choir boys show up. Jack says he ought to be chief, but the boys elect Ralph to be chief.

Ralph declares that the conch shell will be used to determine which boy has the right to speak. Whoever holds the conch shell will speak, and the others will listen silently.

Ralph proposes that the group build a large signal fire on top of the island's central mountain, so that any passing ships might see the fire and know someone is trapped on the island.

Jack returns from a failed hunting trip and sees Ralph and Simon building huts for the younger boys to live in, but Ralph becomes irritated when none of the huts will stand up.

Ralph becomes annoyed with Jack when he implies that Jack and the other hunters are using their hunting duties as an excuse to avoid the real work.

Roger and Maurice decide to cruelly stomp on the sandcastles that the litteuns have built.

Jack and the hunters return from the jungle chanting a bizarre song while carrying a dead pig. Ralph is upset with Jack and accuses him of letting out the signal fire.

As the boys sleep one night, military airplanes battle above the island and a parachutist drifts down onto the island, dead.

Jack discovers pig droppings and decides to track the large boar. He finds the boar and as it trys to run away Jack throws his spear at it but misses.
