    In July, they are off the coast of North Carolina. They claim the land 600 miles in either direction for England.

  • Manteo and Wanchese

    Manteo and Wanchese
    The expedition leads the men to meet natives on the second day. They decide to take two natives back to England after a 6 week stay at Roanoke Island. Their names were Manteo and Wanchese.

  • Colony Attempt

    Colony Attempt
    They return to England with many reports about the new land, now called Virginia. The explorers urge the Queen to colonize the area. She later sends 100 men to help colonize.

  • Uh Oh!

    Uh Oh!
    The colony did not provide enough food to last the winter and 6 ships returned to England to provide food and supplies. A rival tribe planned to attack colonists and Ralph Lane secretly raids the rivals and kills their chief.
