Usernet systems were conceived
Usernets were first conceived by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis in 1979. These systems were in many ways the first social media programs, allowing users to post articles and news to "newsgroups". -
Six Degrees was launched
Six Degrees was first launched in 1979, and is considered the first modern social media site. Although it was bought in 2000, and shut down in 2001, it was once incredibly popular, boasting about 1 million users. -

The first Domain Name Servers (DNS) was created. The domain name system
was important in that it made addresses on the Internet more human-friendly compared to its numerical IP address counterparts.
DNS servers allowed Internet users to type in an easy-to-remember domain name and then converted it to the IP address

The code for the World Wide Web was written by Tim Berners-Lee, based on his
proposal from the year before, along with the standards for HTML, HTTP, and URLs. -

The first banner ad was used to promote 7 art museums. The add was created by Joe McCambley and was added to HotWired.com -
Amazon.com was Incorporated
Amazon was created byJeff Benzos in 1994, and was first launched a year later in 1995. Origionally Amazon sold only books, the first ones to be sold were Benzons' own, but the online retailer has since branched out to include everything from toys, to candles, to furniture. -
Google files for incorporation
Google was created by Standford college students Larry Page, and Sergey Brin. The search engine company filed for incorporation in California on September 4, 1998. Later in the month, they set up their workspace in Susan Wojcicki's garage, and hire Craig Silverstein as their first employee. -
Wikipedia was launched
Wikipedia , an online encyclopedia, was created by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. -
Facebook was created
Facebook was origionally called "thefacebook.com" and was created byHarvard sophmore Mark Zuckerberg. -
Youtube was created
Currently,Youtube was created by 3 former Paypal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. youtube gets 80% of their views from other countries and can be navigated in 76 different languages. -
