    Literacy Events

  • Spoke My First Word

At about 10 months I spoke my first word, "DADA", to my mother. Although I do not specifically recall this event my mom says I had been uttering noises for a long time before actually being about to put together a word. This event relates to the Allingtons Talk because I would not have spoke the word I did without encouraegment and scaffolding from another person.
  • Started Speaking in Sentences

At about two years of age I started speaking in sentences. ALthough I do not remeber this very well either, my parents said that I never stopped talking and was ahead of other children my age. This also relates to Allington's Talk because in this case I would have not been able to form sentences without the guidance of older who were helping and encouraging me.
  • Started Reading

I started small childrens books at the age of 3, and by the time I was four I was a good fluent reader. This realtes to Allingtons's Text beacuse I started with small books that I could understand then radually moved up to larger and more difucult books as I became a better reader.
  • Early Elementary School Reader

In my early stages of elementary school I really enjoyed reading, I was always reading for fun, and never failed to get the award for most AR points in our grade. This also related to Text in the sense that I kept moving to more difficult books as time progressed.
  • Late Elementary School Reader

During my later years of Elementary School my reading habits drifted, and I became more interested in other events such as sports and hanging with frieds, other than reading. I still read but mainly only when the teacher required a book to be read.
  • Summer Library Program

THe summer after my Elementary years I was entered in a summer reading program, where you read for incentives. This really sparked my enthusiasm for reading and I did a great deal of reading that summer.
  • Middle School Reading

In Middle School I did a great deal of non-fictional reading. There was always great rewards for having alot of reading points, so I would always make a little time for some reading each day.
  • Early HIgh School Reading

IN the beginnnign of HIgh School I went in with an attitude of I am going to have to work extremely hard to get good grades. I went out of my way to make time for books, both intellectual and for fun.
  • Late High School Reading

IN my later years of High School I realized generally in order to get good grades I did not have to read nearly as much as I had been and my interest really died down for wanting to read books.
  • College

In college my litery level went up a great amount. Instead of mainly reading nonfiction books, I was now required to read a great deal of fiction books which was a huge change for me. I consider this event under Allington's Dimension of Literacy: Task. At this point reading the books and gathering the information was a challenge/task instead of something to do for fun
