    Hello! I'm Jessica Allen.
Thank you for taking the time to review my literacy timeline. Reading has always been a huge part of my personality. Seeing how I've evolved as a reader throughout the years was fun. Enjoy!
  • My Definition of Reading

    My Definition of Reading
Without consulting Mr. Webster, I would say that reading is having the ability to travel beyond space and time without leaving the room. When I read, I become immersed in the book and can vividly "see" what the author is describing. Fantasy books are a favorite because of this ability.
  • Pre- K

    Pre- K
My earliest experience with literacy involved many memories of playing phonics games on this Vtech Whiz Kid laptop. This is how I gained phonological awareness.
  • First Grade

    First Grade
This is the year I received "Hop On Pop" for Christmas. Before being given this book, I didn't have much of an interest in reading. I began reading this book to my Dad every night when he came home from work.
  • Lower Elementary - The Magic Tree House

Lower Elementary - The Magic Tree House
In second grade, my teacher introduced the class to Jack and Annie. Every adventure that the class finished ended with educational activities that correlated with the book. I remember getting to wrap my friend in toilet paper when we read about mummies!
  • Upper Elementary - Goosebumps

    Upper Elementary - Goosebumps
I ran through The Magic Tree House rather quickly and realized that I enjoyed books that came in a series. The only logical solution was to graduate to Goosebumps. I soon realized that I loved mysteries and books that had surprise endings.
  • Middle School - Fantasy Books

    Middle School - Fantasy Books
Harry Potter will always be a favorite of mine. From the very beginning, I read every book and watched every movie regarding the Wizarding World. The author's ability to create her own world with captivating characters amazed me as a child and I still find new bits of information or Easter Eggs when I reread the series now. I also enjoyed Eragon, Lord of The Rings, and other fantasy books like those during this time.
  • High School - Vampires, Werewolves and Witches! Oh, My!

High School - Vampires, Werewolves and Witches! Oh, My!
After reading fantasy books aimed at children, I started reading fantasy books aimed at young adults. Blood and Chocolate, Twilight, and Anne Rice's novels all intrigued me. I loved anything that involved magical creatures and the paranormal.
  • Adulthood - True Crime and Thrillers

Adulthood - True Crime and Thrillers
Some might say it's because I am Scorpio, but I say it's because I love science and psychology, but true crime and thrillers have become a special interest of mine as an adult. Whether it be books, movies, or podcasts, I enjoy them all. Disclaimer: My husband has to be home because I am still a huge chicken!
  • As a Teacher

    As a Teacher
Today, I am a parent, working with children, and currently completing my field experiences at the local elementary school. The best part of my day is when the children and I discuss the books they checked out at the library. We share book recommendations and reviews regularly and have a wonderful time during Story Time. A few books that are favorites to read to the children in my life are The Magic Tree House, Amber Brown, The Giver, and many more.
