Literacy Timeline

  • Eskimo Kisses

    Eskimo Kisses
When I was about two years old, every night before bed my father would come home from work and we would read a book about a raccoon family and all of the different ways to say goodnight. We learned about Eskimo kisses in that book and always did them before bed after that.
  • Bonding Time

    Bonding Time
When I was about 6, my little brother would always ask me to read his favorite series with him because he couldn't read all of the big words. I always read with him even though it annoyed me that he was too slow.
  • My Favorite Place

    My Favorite Place
When I was 7, I begged my mother to take me to the library so we could get books there. Once we got there I discovered they didnt just have books, but activities centered around reading that we would go to every few weeks. They were always my favorite events.
  • Beginning of an Obsession

    Beginning of an Obsession
When I was in the fourth grade, my father had the entire set of Harry Potter books on display in a bookshelf at my house. My teacher was talking to my parents and telling them I needed to be reading at a higher level, so my dad agreed to let me read his books. To this day, I love Harry Potter.
  • Little Shakespeare

    Little Shakespeare
When I was in the fourth grade, my teacher used to make us read and memorize little skits that had something to do with the English lesson we were working on at the time. Everyone else always dreaded the days we performed for the class, but it was always my favorite part of the unit.
  • Cabin Quiet Time

    Cabin Quiet Time
When I was in going into the sixth grade, I went to sleepover summer camp for the first time. Everyday for an hour we had quiet time in our cabins and while my cabin mates would always nap or play cards, I was always reading.
  • Author at Age 10

    Author at Age 10
When I was 10, my friends and I would write stories during recess on scrap paper. On index cards we would write all of the dialogue of our characters and create little books which we would staple together and make all of our teachers read. We even read them to the class once.
  • 6th Grade Rebellion

    6th Grade Rebellion
When I was in the sixth grade I had a bedtime at 8:30. I was not happy about this, so I always kept a flashlight in my bed and a book on my nightstand. As soon as my mom left the room, I started to read for about 45 minutes before bed. I always thought I was so sneaky, but looking back my mother definitely knew what I was doing and let me stay up to read.
  • Clumsy

    Clumsy
Whenever I was little, (and more recently), my mom would make fun of me for walking with my book and eating while reading and such. I bumped into a lot of walls.
  • Beach Days

    Beach Days
Whenever I go to the beach, I always make sure to pack a book as its my favorite activity to read at the beach.
  • My Favorite Series

    My Favorite Series
When I was in the 5th grade I started reading the Percy Jackson series and read all of the adjoining series as well. As new books came out I read and even got some signed. Recently, it was announced that there was going to be a new Percy Jackson series coming out on television, and it was really cool to watch my favorite series grow over the years.
