Adolescent Literacy Timeline
This is a timeline of my literacy experience from 4th grade through high school. -
4th Grade
- Loved reading
- I was very good at reading and always offered to read for the class.
- Teacher gave all students Christmas presents that included a book. All students got one book but she gave me a different book; I was upset.
- Teacher tried to meet my intrapersonal needs by giving me books she thought I would be interested in so that I would enjoy reading them and connect to them.
- Graphic organizers about characters
-
5th Grade
- Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Goosebumps, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen Books
- Popcorn Reading
- Loved going to the school Library and the Public Library
- Always raised hand to read in class
- Strategy - writing a summarization of readings
- Pizza Hut Reading Rewards
-
7th Grade
- Loved my L.A. teacher!
- Still loved reading -Tangerine, Pride and Prejudice -Teacher built in interpersonal needs with reading by allowing us to read and share thoughts and feelings about the readings in groups with peers.
- Reading Groups (different books, present) (interpersonal)
-
8th Grade
- Favorite book-The Outsiders
- Banned Book Project
- Community - writing reflective papers on the books we read and then sharing them with peers
- Enjoyed Writing
- Started liking to read in front of the class less and less, still loved reading independently
- Teacher used questioning as a strategy during reading a lot of times. For example, She would ask us why Darry felt the need to protect the brothers in The Outsiders. (Parents died, rough life, it shows us how their life is not "perfect")
-
Freshman-Senior Year
- The Island of Dr. Moreau (Good) -The Great Gatsby, How to Kill a Mockingbird, The Sun Also Rises, Shakespeare (Bad)
- No longer liked reading unless it was something I got to choose
- No longer liked writing due to teacher
- Strategy - Synthesizing while writing essays on books
- Strategy - Annotating
-
Future Goals
- I want my students to find a personal love for reading.
- I want to make writing easier for students by letting them have a say in what we write about.
- I want my students to feel that what we read is relatable and empowering.
- I want my students to be able to feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions on a topic, whether that be a reading or a writing.
- I want to have time in my day for students to read a self-chosen book everyday.
