    First Grade Studies

    The goal of this was to determine the best method of teaching reading. This became a debate which author Jeanne Chan published a book about called "Learning To Read: The Great Debate". This book discusses the method of decoding and how it helped students understanding spelling and word recognition.
  • Louise Rosenblatt

    She focused a lot of her studies on the Reader Response Theory throughout the 1970's. This theory emphasizes the importance of the reader and how they interpret what they've read. The reader should gain understanding and meaning from what they have read.
  • Denny Taylor

    Denny Taylor created the family literacy theory in 1983. This theory describes how reading and writing should be embedded into the daily lives of children. This includes families doing things such as writing lists, labeling products, and pointing out traffic signs for their children.
  • California Reading Framework

    This consisted of more challenging texts for all reading levels and allowed for more reading comprehension. This is also when more book clubs and literacy circles started to form in schools. Other schools around the United States used this as well.
  • South Carolina's Read to Succeed

    This law was developed to support the development and evaluation for a literacy plan in grades K-12. It helps provide guidance to school districts to be able to support reading and writing development for all students to ensure they move on from school with reading and writing comprehension skills.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

    This law ensures equal opportunity for all students. It also provides training for teachers to teach literacy subjects such as phonics, reading fluency like oral reading skills, annd reading comprehension strategies.
