Literacy Process Timeline

  • Being read to as a child

    My mother would read to me as a child. One book every night and sometimes during the day as an activity.
  • Being taught one Spanish word a day

    My father used to teach me one Spanish word a day to expand my vocabulary and ability to speak/understand two languages.
  • Writing my name

    Learning how to write my name and other basic words. This happened when I was in preschool, my mom helped me at home as well.
  • Beginning school

    Starting the learning process and my literacy journey. I began to be taught how to actually write
  • Excelling in reading and writing

    I never encountered any issues in school when it came to reading and writing. I instead struggled with learning mathematics.
  • Going to the library

    My grandmother used to take me to the library as an outing. I remember reading lots of nonfiction books about animals.
  • Reading as a hobby

    I started to pick up books that interested me as a hobby to read. Such as hatchet, or the Harry Potter series.
  • Writing short stories

    I began having writing assignments in middle school. The creative short story writing was my favorite, I even did it on my free time occasionally.
  • Essay Writing

    The learning of essay writing began in middle school. I recall having to learn many different styles of writing, outlines, and types of essays.
  • College Composition

    Freshman year I took college comp. I enjoyed the course, even though it was writing intensive. It helped me get a grasp on college level assignments.
