Literacy Process in My Life

  • 4th Grade

    4th Grade
The earliest I can remember reading a book was the summer of fourth grade. I was not very happy about it but my parents would make me read a chapter each night before I would go to bed. Sadly, I do not remember retaining any of it but I was still intrigued by the storyline.

    5th Grade
When I was in fifth grade I remember having a history teacher that I did not like him very much. He was very insistent on reading our textbooks which I struggled with a lot. The words never made sense to me and I couldn't remember anything I read. I slowly began to not like reading at all.

    8th Grade
During this time in my life, I found this book called "Go Ask Alice". I loved this book because it was like nothing I had read before. It was the diary entries of a girl who started using drugs at 15 years old. It was also something I probably shouldn't have read but It made me want to read more!

    10th Grade
In tenth grade, I was still struggling with reading so my high school sent me to a class that helped students with reading issues. My main issue in that class was reading a story and completely comprehending it. I would read a short article and then answer questions relating to the material I read. I think that class did give me good tools to be a better reader.

    11th Grade
In 11th grade, we read a book called Of Mice and Men. This book stood out to me for a number of reasons like imagery and social realism. My teacher read the book to the class for the majority of the time which helped me understand it a lot better. Although, we were supposed to read it at home before we came into class to read it together.

    Beginning of College English 121
After I graduated high school I went straight into college. I was confident for the most part until I got to my English class which had a very intense teacher. I am not sure why that class was so difficult for me at the begging but I thought it might be from the textbook we were given to read. I struggled with reading the book and relating it to the material in the course.
  • Going back into College English 121

Going back into College English 121
Eventually, I dropped the class and took a break from college. When I went back I felt better prepared because I took some time off to get my mind in a good headspace. Once I went back to that class with a new teacher I felt like I was learning a lot more and the material was different. In this class, we talked a lot more and discussed what we were reading in greater detail. We learned how to make an argumentative paper which I didn't really know how to do until I went to that class!

College Summer Child Growth and Dev
This book I read over the summer was the first book I actually fully read for school. Since I am really passionate about children and the material could help children learn better I read as much as I could. The material I was reading I applied to the school I work at.
  • Goody Two Shoes (Child Literature)

    Goody Two Shoes (Child Literature)
The most recent piece of literature I read was called "Goody Two Shoes". This book, (and the course I am taking) is helping me gain more knowledge about how children have learned how to read throughout history. Learning about this is helping make better decisions at my school to help my students learn how to read.
  • American History Class

    American History Class
Recently I have realized how I have developed as a reader. I enjoy reading things that I am passionate about. This usually involves any type of early childhood development material, psychology, and politics/ history. This class I am taking is furthering my understanding of how this country has developed through time and the ways it has repeated history.
