California asked the union if they can be a free state. But the Union thought that it will cause a problem with the balance with the Free and slavory states. -
Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin
The book was by a woman named Harriet Beecher Stowe, which became a great book seller. It talks about a slave woman who's child was going to be sold; so they run north. Then meets Tom who helps her to the underground tarin, but he was soon killed by his master, Simon Legree. -
Kansas - Nebraska Act
Stephen Douglas from Illinois didn't like the idea of slavery, so he wanted Chicago to have it development from the west. Douglas wanted to even run for presidentisy, but he needed supporters from the southern Democrats. Kansas and Nebraska now became supporters for popular sovereignty by allowing the people to decide if their should be slavery in their state. -
Bleeding Kansas
When John Brown (from CT and OH states) said that God chose him to end the slavery. He then took some New Englaners;went to a proslavery town and killed five men in front of their families. Because of that it made a murderous raid thoughtout Kansas. -
Bred Scott Decision
When Bred Scott (enslaved man) from Missouri had took action in suing is owner. But the Supreme court didn't allow it because slaves were not citizans and have no right to sue. But then Chief of Justice Roger Taney stated a fact that the Congress never had power to ban slavery. -
John Brown's Raid
Brown has been at Pottawatomie, Kansasa for three years, even came after Virginia's arsena. He hoping that they will be able to have their weapons, and give it to the enslaved men who are willing to fight with Brown. He planned on making slave owns be slaves, but then Robert E. Lee stopped John Brown; killed two of the son's and Brown was setence to be hung. -
Election of 1860
It was that time of year when they had to pick a new president; the top two best candidates were Abraham Lincoln and J.C. Breckinridge. Breckinridge wanted to expand the slavery territories, but Lincoln saw slavery different than Breckinridge even though he was kind of an outsider. Abe won the free (but not New Jersey) states and John won the Lower South states, but Lincoln ended winning anyway.
