Captain Cook Dicovered Australia
Nearly 250 years ago Captain James Cook was coming back from New Zealand. While he was at New Zealand just about to go back to England he spotted a verbose island. He stayed there April 1770 till August 1770! -
The First Fleet
The first fleet arrived in 11 ships with over 1480 men, women and children. The trip to Australia took three months, the First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay on 24 January 1788. it is estimated that 69 people either died, discharged, or deserted during the First Fleet's voyage from Portsmouth to Sydney Cove. -
The Great Mathew Flinders!
In 1803 there was a man named Mathew Flinders who was an Australian explorer. It was Matthew Flinders who made the suggestion of the name we use today before the name New Holland.The name Australia is from Latin australis meaning southern! -
Western Austrlia
Western Australia was claimed in 1829. Aboriginal people call this place 'Manjaree', meaning 'gathering place', where locals and visitors engaged in trade and cultural exchange before Europeans arrived. It has continued to be a place of meetings greetings and farewells. -
The Gold Rush
Gold rushes in New South Wales and Victoria begin. The discovery of gold in the 1850s started a making people rush over, that transformed the Australian colonies. The first discoveries of payable gold were at Ophir in New South Wales and then at Ballarat and Bendigo Creek in Victoria. -
The Stockade
Eureka Stockade was in Victoria, Australia. The Gold Diggers, in the Ballarat region of Victoria Australia, hated the gold mining licensing system. When Governor Hotham had lots of power in June 1854 he made twice weekly license checks to be made by the Gold Commission Police Force. The battle only went for 20mins. -
The Long Federation Speech...
Each state on Australia was like its own little country! They had there own armies,laws and leaders! Henry Parks wanted to change all that! It was at Tenderfield. The speech was about all the states uniting to be one country and vote for one leader to lead all 5 states! Some people wanted to stop that speech and have Australia have all different country in it! -
The BIG Federation
After the Federation Speech all the states were convinced besides Western Australia but they joined one year later! In 1901, in Sydney, Centennial Park. The commonwealth of Australia was made a Federation with all 5 states, The Northern Territory and the ACT come along a thew year later! The first Prime minster was Edward Barton. Not all people were included in the Federation, The Aboriginals were left out and they made it harder for people not European to immigrant here!
