    On January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy became the 35th president of the United States. When John became president, he was the first Roman Catholic and the youngest person to ever be President. Before John F. Kennedy became president, he was born into a wealthy family, had a great reputation in the military, and was high in education. Earlier, John successfully ran for Congress in 1946 and for the Senate in 1952.

    In the late 1960s, John F. Kennedy gave a speech to 10,000 people at the University of Michigan asking if they would serve abroad for their specific job. This speech began the Peace Corps development. Then, on March 1st, 1961, the Peace Corps was established by executive order with the help of John F. Kennedy. Then, the Congress approved the Peace Corp as a federal agency in the state department.

    Harlan and Nancy had their first child on April 7, 1962. They named her Roxanne.

    Harlan became a police officer for Wisconsin in November, 1962 and stayed there until retirement.

    On July 1st, 1963, the post office started using ZIP codes, short for Zone Improvement Plan. Zip codes were first started when the United States Post Office Department enacted postal zones for larger cities called postal codes. Then, they decided they needed a more organized system, so they introduced the non-mandatory 5-digit zip code. Along also came the two-digit state abbreviations.

    On November 22nd, 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. While with his wife, Jacqueline, during a Presidential motorcade in the Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, John F. Kennedy was fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald with an Italian Carcano M91/38 bolt-action rifle. The bullet hit John's head and created a large hole on the right side of his head. Then John was raced to Parkland Hospital where he then died due to the bullet wound.

    Harlan and Nancy had their second child on June 26, 1966. They named her Michelle.
  • First Heart Transplant

    On December 3rd, 1967, Surgeon Christiaan Barnard completed the first ever heart transplant successfully in Cape Town, South Africa. Dr. Barnard completed the heart transplant on 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky at Groote Schuur Hospital. Lewis Washkansky was a South African grocer dying from chronic heart disease. Lewis received the transplant from a women named Denise Darvall. She was a 25-year-old woman who was fatally injured in a car crash and her heart was viable for the transplant.

    On April 4th, 1968, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Dr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray. Martin Luther King Jr was standing on the balconing of the Lorraine Motel when he was shot with a Remington Model 760. The .30-6 bullet shot King in the right cheek, which broke his jaw, and the bullet then traveled down his spinal cord. Martin was then raced to St. Joseph's Hospital where they performed CPR, but King later died.

    On November 5th, 1968, Richard Nixon became the 37th president of the United States. However, Richard dropped out of office on August 9th, 1974, when he was caught covering up the Watergate Scandal and was ordered to be impeached. While president, Nixon did succed in bringing POWs (Prisoners Of War) home during the Vietnam War.

    On July 20th, 1969, Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon for the first time on the Apollo 11 spacecraft. After, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin went abourd lunar module Eagle to explore more of the moon while Collins stayed behind. While the moon landing took place, 500 million people worldwide watched it happen.

    Harlan went West to Canada to go fishing and hunting.

    Harlan and Nancy had their third child on November 14, 1972. They named her Kristi.
  • First house with the family!

    Harlan moved to his second house, but with his family all together in Milwaukee.

    Harlan and Nancy moved up to Mosinee while their youngest daughter, Kristi, bought the house in Milwaukee.
