War Powers Act
A congressional resolution designed to limit the US president's ability to initiate or escalate military actions abroad. The act was signed by Roosevelt during World War 2. -
Geneva Accords
This was an agreement in which the French agreed to withdraw their troops from North Vietnam. Although they'd still be temporarily divided along the 17th parallel. -
Domino Theory
The Domino Theory was brought up when Eisenhower was hosting a meeting about the war and proposed it,“You have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is a certainty that it will go over very quickly.” -
Assassination of Diem
Diem deepened his government unpopularity by having heavy handed tactics against the Vietcong. Along with his brutal treatment of the opposition to his regime alienated the South Vietnamese populace. He was assassinated at a coup d'état by some of his generals. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
The resolution authorized President Johnson to to take any necessary measures he believed were appropriate to gain peace and security. -
LBJ ordered 1st troops to Vietnam
When two U.S. radioed that they had been fired upon by North Vietnam forces. In response, LBJ ordered to send more troops in order to prevent that from happening again. He then wanted to launch Operation Rolling Thunder, a bombing against the North. What caused this was the North continuing to bombard the U.S. The purpose of this was to show that the U.S. wasn't messing around. -
Tet Offensive
The largest military campaign of the Vietnam war, it was a coordinated series of attacks onto the South by the North. -
My Lai Massacre
This was a mass murder of unarmed South Vietnamese citizens by the US troops. A group of American soldiers brutally killed women, children, and old men in the village of My Lai. -
Nixon’s Vietnamization Policy
Nixon's plan was to encourage the South to take more responsibility for fighting the war. Although his planned failed " because it did not allow for the increase of troops and materials on the ARVN's side to counter the buildup of troops and materials on the NVA's side." -
Nixon sends troops into Cambodia
Nixon announced that he was going to send troops in order to receive COSVN, "the headquarters of the entire communist military operation in South Vietnam." -
Kent State Shooting
Upon violent student protests at Kent State University, a national guard was called and fired at the students for 13 seconds and in total killed four students and injured nine. -
Hard Hat Riot
Around noon, aroun400 construction workers and around 800 office workers started to attack around 1000 demonstrators who had something to do with the student strike. -
Nixon’s Christmas Bombing
The purpose of the bombing "was to persuade the South Vietnamese to go along with an armistice to which they were violently opposed." -
Paris Peace Accords
The United States,South Vietnam, Viet Cong, and North Vietnam all signed the accord in order to end the war and establish peace. -
Saigon Falls
This event was the takeover of Vietnam by the Vietcong. The US was then forced to abandon their embassy in the city, evacuating over 7,000 US citizens. The takeover forced the South to surrender.
