Independence
1951 - Libya becomes independent under King Idris al-Sanusi. Libya became a constitutional and hereditary monarchy under King Idris. This was Libya's first and only monarch. This was able to happen because of the UN General Assembly passing a resolution stating ideas for Libya's independence. This political change was new experience within Libya. -
Pipeline
1961- King Idris opens a 104-mile pipeline, which links important oil fields in the interior to the Mediterranean Sea and makes it possible to export Libyan oil for the first time. The oil industry has increasingly dominated the whole economy. This was the main export working the economy within Libya. -
Gaddafi Era
1969 - King Idris overthrown in military coup led by Muammar Gaddafi, and attempts to form mergers with several Arab countries. Gaddafi also introduces state socialism by nationalising most economic activity, including the oil industry. Gaddafi is now incharge. This new leader chnages the political views in Libya. -
Cultural Revolution
Gaddafi declares "cultural revolution". The cultural revoltuion was a movement to purge Libya of foreign influences in favor of Islamic values and Qaddafi's socialist ideas. These political changes caused the country to be socially modified. Gaddafi stated, "execution is the fate of anyone who forms a political party" his power effects how Libya socially views him. -
Tunisia and Libya Agreemnet
1974- Libya and Tunisia sign an agreement on a merger between the two countries for a "Islamic Arab Republic"but this also failed to work in practice and ultimately differences between the two countries. -
Peoples Revolution
1977- Gaddafi declared a "people's revolution" which meant the Libya was changing its form of government from a republic to a "jamahiriya". This made Libya became a direct democracy governed by the people through local popular councils and communes. At the top of this government structure was the General People's Congress with Gaddafi as secretary-general. This led to chnages in the political stability of Libya as well as the social status in Libya. -
US strikes Libya
1986 - US bombs Libyan military facilities, residential areas of Tripoli and Benghazi. This attack kills about 101 people, US strikes Gaddafi's house and ends up killing his adopted daughter. US believe that they bombed and struck Libya because of the Libyan being involed in the bombing of Berlin which is frequented by US military personnel. This created chaos within Libya. -
Oslo Accords
1995-Gaddafi expels about 30,000 Palestinians in protest at the Oslo accords between the Palestine Liberation Organisation and Israel. The Oslo accords is officially called the Declaration of Principles (DOP), This was an attempt to resolve the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. For Libya to show its objection to the agreements Gaddafi government expelled the Palestinian community residing in the country. This socially impacted the country of Libya because of the unsupportive decision made -
Lockerbie bombing- 2.7 billion
2003- Libya signs a deal worth $2.7billion to compensate families of the Lockerbie bombing victims. Libya takes responsibility for the bombing in a letter to the UN Security Council. This economic agreement expressed Libyas decision to help fix what they have created. This could either take away from the country economic wise or become a successful agreement. -
Auction of Oil and Gas
2005- Libya's first auction of oil and gas exploration licences allows the return of US energy companies for the first time in more than 20 years. This allows Libyas economy to increase and expand. The economy will positively be affected. -
Uprising
2011- Arrest of human rights campaigner sparks violent protests in eastern city of Benghazi that rapidly spread to other cities. Authorities use aircraft to attack protestors. Many Libyan diplomats resign in protest. Gaddafi insists that he will not quit, and remains in control of the capital, Tripoli. -
Take Gaddafi Down
2011- International Criminal Court seeks arrest of Gaddafi for crimes against humanity following "widespread and systematic attacks" on civilians. Gaddafi wasn't treating the people of lIbya with any respect and didn't give the people the voice and indepedence that they wanted.
