  • Earliest known gay rights orginization is created

    In 1924, Chicago, The Society for Human Rights is the earliest known orginization that supported gay rights.

  • Harry Hay creates the first gay rights orginization (no specific date)

    The Mattachine Society is created by Harry Hay, a gay rights activist.

  • First Transgender Orginization Established (exact day unknown)

    In 1966, San Francisco, the National Transsexual Counseling Unit was created as the first transgender orginization to exsist publicly.

  • Stonewall Riots

    This is a three day event of rioting that sparked in a New York Gay Bar. This event made a very small group of activists into a very large one, it changed the history for this movement.

  • Vermont introduces Civil Unions (exact day unknown)

    This allowed people of the same sex to be in a relationship publicly, and get the same rights almost as if thye are married.

  • Massachusetts is the first state to leagalize gay marriage.

    This is a breakthoruhg for the entire LGBT community, they were now allowed to marry who they want. Since this event took place 36 other states have also leagalized it.

  • United States vs. Windsor

    In 2013 the court invalidated a provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, this was because it violated the equal protection principles.

  • Harvey Milk, First openly gay person elected into public office

    Harvey isn't considered a "leader", but he is someone who made a difference in the LGBT community. He paved a way to let people understand that loving someone the same sex as you does not change how you are as a person.
