    Prior to may 4th Lewis is elected captain of the expedition to explore west. Lewis invites Clark and others to join him. Lewis orders supplies and oversees the production of a large keelboat he will use on his expedition. Lewis takes the keelboat down the Ohio river to pickup Clark and other expedition members. the expedition officially began may 4th.

    Sgt. Charles Floyd dies near present day Sioux City, Iowa, most likely from a burst appendix. He is burried near floyd's river.

    The corps confronted the Teton Sioux tribe who demanded that the corpse give them one of their boats as a toll. Chief Black Buffalo relieved the tension before any fights could occur. The corps stay with the tribe for three more days after everything is resolved.

    The corps discovers Mandan and Hidatsas Indian villages. The captains decide to build a fort across the river from the main village. They name the fort "Fort Mandan".

    Lewis was very ill so he boiled choke cherry twigs until they became a liquid. After a few hours of drinking the bitter twig juice Lewis stated that he felt much better.

    Lewis finds a village of Shoshones and asks them for horses, when the rest of the corps arrive the find out that Sacajewea is the sister of the chief. Fourteen days later they leave the tribe with 29 horses, a mule, and a guide named old toby.

    Not long after entering Idaho the corps were compelled to kill a colt to eat because of their craving for meat. They named the river they killed the colt by "colt killed creek''.

    Eight or nine men including Lewis all got sick. they got so sick they had to lie along the side of the road, Some couldn't even be put on a horse because they were so sick. Clark was constantly giving out pills to help those who needed them.

    Lewis believes he is close to the ocean, though he is actually 20 miles away. As they begin to approach the ocean they confront a large storm that stops the expedition for three weeks.

    Lewis and Clark run into eight Blackfeet warriors, they decide to stay the night with them. The next morning they caught the warriors trying to steal their horses and guns. A fight erupts and the result is the death of two Blackfeet warriors.

    George Drouillard is known as the third most important man in the corps, right behind Lewis and Clark. Lewis paid him double what he paid any of the other corps members, Lewis praised him for his great hunting and scouting skills.
