Start of Journey: St. Louis, MO
Lewis, Clark and crew met up in St Louis to begin the journey. "At half after one P. M. our progress was interrupted [hole] the near approach of a violent thunder storm from the N. W. and concluded to take shelter in a little cabbin hard by untill the rain should be over"--Lewis National Geographic -
The expedition is stalled by storm
"Some hard Shours of rain accompaned with Some wind detained us untill about 7 oClock."-Clark
The storm would have knocked their boat over if the men hadn't have jumped out kept it upright with the anchor and cable.
The storm delayed their trip for a couple hours. -
Charles Floyd dies
Charles Floyd died from illness. "Here Sergeant Floyd died, notwithstanding every possible effort was made by the commanding officers, and other persons, to save his life."-Clark -
Lewis and Clark encounter the Sioux tribe
Lewis and Clark encountered the chiefs of the Teton Sioux tribe today. There were multiple chiefs and they gave them some whiskey which they seemed to really enjoy. "we gave they ½ a wine glass of whiskey which they appeared to be exceedingly fond of."-Clark -
Lewis and Clark peacefully trade with natives
The trade negotiations started out kind of rough. But eventually Lewis and Clark peacfully trade with some natives and get meat. And they also discovered that they need a better interpreter. "They gave us Some meat, (we discover our interpeter do not Speak the language well)"-Clark -
They finish making Fort Mandan
They finished making fort Mandan. "We this day moved into our huts which are now completed. This place which we call Fort Mandan, is situated in a point of low ground, on the north side of the Missouri, covered with tall and heavy cottonwood".-Clark
They also interacted with natives who warned them about the Sioux. -
Man sick with Pleurisy

They treated him by bleeding him. Not much else was written on this day, but I can't imagine that bleeding someone is going to help them with any kind of disease...unless they have a disease causing them to have too much blood. -
Jean Baptiste was born

Jean Baptiste was born on February 11, 1805. "It is worthy of remark that this was the first child which this woman had boarn and as is common in such cases her labour was tedious and the pain violent" -Lewis -
Killed a 600 pound grizzly bear
Grizzley encounterClark estimated the bear to be 500 pounds, but Lewis thought he was off (too light) by 100 pounds. " it was a most tremendious looking anamal, and extreemly hard to kill"--Lewis They had to shoot the bear 10 times to kill it. -
Lewis and Clark Meet the Shoshone
They find some Shoshone men and make peace with them. They take the Shoshone to a place where they can meet the rest of the Corps. When the rest of the Corps finally get there, Sakagawea notices that the chief is her brother. The tribe gives them some horses to help on their journey. -

The camas root
The corps find a new plant called "camas root". They eat the plant but unfortunately it gives them digestion problems. “I am verry Sick to day and puke which relive me.”-Clark -
Lewis and Clark stay at Fort Clatsop
They made the fort three miles up Netul creek. There were many deer that would supply food to the men. This is where they spent the winter. -
Lewis' dog gets stolen in Idaho
Lewis' dog was stolen by indians who threatened violence if some stolen goods were not returned. He sent some men off to find the dog and to shoot if necessary. Luckily nobody was killed and the dog was returned soon after. -
Fight with Blackfoot indians
Indian fightIndians were caught trying to steal the men's guns and horses. This caused a fight to break out and several indians were killed "R Fields as he seized his gun stabed the indian to the heart with his knife. The fellow ran about 15 steps and fell dead." -Lewis
