    Lewis and Clark start upstream for their trip that has been planned since the year of 1803. William Clark and Meriwether Lewis both went on the Corps of Discovery expedition with four dozen other men.

    Lewis and Clark expedition

    During this time Lewis and Clark had met the Missouri Indians. The encounter went well and Lewis and Clark's men ended up trading and exchanging gifts.
  • indians become threatening

    The encounter Lewis and Clark had with the Missouri Indians was far different than their encounter with the Souix Indians. The encounter with the Souix was anything but good. The Indians were threatening and became potential enemies of the two.
  • Lewis and Clark get settled with Mandon indians

    When Lewis and Clark came across Fort Mandan, they repaired their equipment and built relationships with the Indians in the area. Both the Mandan and the Hidatsa taught the explorers about the country to the west as well. They also hired an interpreter Toussaint Charbonneau and started traveling with his wife Sacagawea.
  • Lewis and Clark travel into the Rockies

    While traveling into the rockies wind gusts blew some of the supplies into the Milk River. Fortunately Sacagawea saved most of the supplies by retrieving them from the water. During the last week of May, Lewis and Clark finally caught sight of the mountains.
  • Trading with the Shoshone

    On August 10th Lewis spoted an Indian on horseback. Since the journey to the Pacific could only be made on horseback Lewis and Clark traded items such as knives and old shirts.
  • Setting off for the Continental Divide

    When setting off for the Continental divide things started to go down hill. During the journey it began to snow and food sources were scarce. Lewis and Clark finally reached the divide and made it over, getting them to the Bitterroot Valley. The Americans then encountered some Flathead Indians and bought horses for their trip across the Bitterroot Mountains
  • Reaching the Snake River

    The Americans reached the Snake River on October 10th. They later made it to Columbia six days after their arival at snake river. Severe weather delayed the trip to the Pacific but in november the Americans finally arrived to their destination.
  • Setting up Camp

    The Americans set up camp south of Columbia. During their time there they made moccasins, worked on maps, storred food, and did other tasks that kept them busy. The American's next goal was to get to the mouth of Columbia.
  • Ready for home

    After the expedition was complete, the Ameroicans were ready to return home. Since it was the middle of winter they were prevented from leaving until the snow melted. After the snow had finally melted in the middle of March the Americans were ready for their return home
  • Welcomed home

    After the long journey of 80 miles, the Americans finally made it home to St. Louis. There they were greeted by a thousand people entusiastically welcoming home with gunfire and salutes for the expedition they had successfully completed.
