St. LouisThomas Jefferson was president at this time and wanted to try one more time to discover the West. He chose Lewis to be his personal secretary for the expedition. Him and Jefferson planned it together. Fort Mandan
Alone the way they saw alot of wild life. Including coyotes, antelope, and mule deer. On October 4th, they reached earth-lodge villages called Mandans and Hidatsas. Lewis, Clark and the gang decided to stay at the fort for the winter till the sprin thaw. Fort Mandan -
A baby boy was born
Sacagawea has a babyWhile the expedition wintered at Fort Mandan, Sacagawea was going to have a baby. Clark's assistant made a poition out of a rattlesnakes rattle to give to Sacagawea for the labor to go quicker. Soon after there was a baby boy was born, him name was Jean Baptist. -
10,000 buffalo and a grizzly bear
10,000 BuffaloThis is a day that the men found animails were at there advatage. They were alarmed by the sounds of over 10,000 buffalo in a herd. They were able to eat up to 9 lbs of meat at day. Also today just past the mouth of the Yellowstone river Lewis and another hunter killed a grizzly bear. It was a good day for eating. -
Some weather on the expedition.
Great FallsThe Great Falls in Missouri was a obsticle they were not planning on. With the Great Falls and then four more waterfalls immediatelyafter, they had to get out ot the water and walk. Eighteen and a half miles to get around all the water falls. A month later they went though rough terrain and bad condtions. Some of the bad weather condtions consist of hail and boiling heat. Also lots of pickly pear cactus they had to go though. -
Shoshone Tribe
Shoshone TribeLewis and his men came upon a group of women who belonged to the Shoshone tribe. They quickly became civil and were treated as visitors. The tribes chief Cameahwait was worried that Lewis and his corps would not make it to the Pacific if they didn't have horses. So after negotiating they agreed to sell Lewis some horses. And in return when Lewis told them " When the whitemen return we will give you our guns and every other article necessary to their defence and comfort.” -
How a tribe helps Lewis and Clark out
Tribe helping Lewis and ClarkThey finally got out of the Bitteroot Mountians they arrived in a area now called Weippi, Idaho. The Nez Perce tribe didn't know if they should be friends with them. After advise from old women they decied to to brfriend them. The Indians taught them how to start a fire in a log and make a canoes. The Indians enjoyed a meal fresh salmon and camas roots. -

Present day The Corps again continued their journey in canoes down the Rocky Mountains on the Clearwater River (in northern Idaho), the Snake River and finally the Columbia River into what is present-day Portland, Oregon -
Fort Clatsop
Fort ClatsopDuring the expedition Lewis and the corps were on there way and they stoped by Fort Clatsop, named for a neighboring Indian tribe. Captains handed out handkerchiefs and the last of the expedition’s tobacco as gifts. They all celebrates Christmas in there new quarters. -
The tribe is affected by a death
Death of Sacagawea Sacagwa dies at the age of 24 at Fort Manuel in Shoshone Reservation, Wyoming. Clark took custody over her son Jean Baptiste and her daughter Lisettte.
