  • The Telephone is Patented

    Alexander Graham Bell is granted the first patent for the telephone on March 7th, 1876.
  • The Battle of Little Bighorn

    The Battle of the Little Bighorn, also commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand, was a battle between the forces of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes and the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army. The battle, ended in the defeat of U.S. forces, was the most significant action of the Great Sioux War of 1876.

    The Compromise of 1877 was a deal arranged in an unwritten manner between US Congressmen of the disputes about the 1876 Presidential Election. Pulls troops out of the south and ends the Reconstruction Era.

    Thomas Edison files for a patent on his version of the lightbulb. Edison continues perfecting his invention until November 4, 1879 when he files for a new patent as he had changed the filament type, strip coil, and contact wires.

    On July 2, 1881, James Garfield is shot at 9:30 AM and later dies on September 19, 1881. James Garfield is declared dead due to sepsis and infection.

    The Dawes Act allots land to Native Americans. Treats Native Americans as individuals not members of tribes.

    The Sherman Silver Purchase Act forces the US to purchase twice as much silver as well as push more money into circulation.
  • The Tariff Act of 1890

    After 450 amendments, the Tariff Act of 1890 was passed and increased average duties across all imports from 38% to 49.5%.
  • The Wounded Knee Massacre

    Soldiers in the United States Army massacre hundreds of Lakota Indians with nearly a majority being women and children. The massacre came after a failed attempt by the army to disarm the Native Americans.
  • The Baltimore Crisis

    The Baltimore Crisis was an incident between Chile and the United States when two US Navy sailors were stabbed in front of the "True Blue Saloon" in Chile. The sailors were both stationed on the USS Baltimore and the United States government demanded an immediate apology upon which Chile paid 75,000$.

    The Panic of 1893 was a national economic crisis that occurred when two of the country's largest employers, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and the National Cordage Company. After the failure of these two companies, a panic ensured as the stock market crashed.

  • The USS Maine Explodes

    USS Maine was a Navy ship from Florida to Havana, Cuba, aiming to protect the US and its allies during the Cuban War of Independence. It exploded in Havana Harbor during the Cuban revolt against Spain and became a notable conflict in the United States.
  • The American Anti-Imperialist League is Founded

    The American Anti-Imperialist League was an organization established on June 15, 1898, to battle the American annexation of the Philippines. The Anti-imperialists believed that expansion by the US was anti-republican government ideologically and that it was against the beliefs of the people to annex the Phillippines, therefore the government had no right to annex.
  • The Open Door Policy is Established

    The policy allows for completely open trade with China to all countries. The policy is never actually signed into law but is simply established as a principal.
