Rosa Parks & the Montgomery Bus Boycott
Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat for a white man. This led to a year long bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. At the end of the boycott, the city buses were desegregated. Little Rock Nine
First black students to attend Little Rock High School. This was shortly after segregation became became illegal public schools. The Little Rock Nine were harassed by the white students daily.

Sit-ins
Sit-ins were a form of nonviolent protest due to businesses refusing to serve African Americans. A protester would refuse to leave a lunch counter until they were served. First sit-in took place in Greensboro, NC.

Freedom Rides
More than 400 white and black civil rights volunteers rode buses into the South to challenge segregation laws.

250,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial to advocate for civil rights. At the end Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech.

Assassination of Martin Luther King
James Earl Ray assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. while he was on his hotel balcony. He was at the hotel to support black sanitation workers on strike.
