- Segregation - grouping people by race/belief
- President Truman signs this Executive Order - and the military were effected
- Executive Order 9981 ends armed formed segregation

CORE founded
- The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) was founded in Chicago in 1942
- They were committed to be non violent in their quest to make a change
- Went on to change segregation in the North than went down south in the 1950's

The Birmingham Camaign
- Arrested black protester for marching without a permit
- King wrights a response from a negative comment on the news paper and tells the people that there is just and unjust
- They tried to negotiate with the white people in Birmingham

Civil Rights Act of 1964
- A quarter of a million people including whites, union members, clergy, students, entertainers, and celebrities such as Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson.
- The Civil Rights bill took awhile to pass through congress
- The Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned all discrimination from race, sex, and other characteristics

First Lunch Counter Sit-in
- 4 black people went in a drugstore the waitress wouldn't serve them so they stayed there until the store closed
- After that the kept growing from 4 to 20 and etc.
- On July 25, 1960 the first black costumer ate there

Freedom Riders
- Freedom Riders wanted to test if people were following the new law for them
- A white mob crowded around the bus burning it and attacked them
- Kennedy sent court marshals to secure peace and safe passage

Integration of Central High School
- In Little Rock public schools segregation had to go down so they was desegregation
- Nine black teens were able to go to a High school, later these students were called the little rock nine
- A lot of people were against this but some of many few that were out there helped them to achieve what they wanted

March on Washington
- A quarter of a million people marched at Washington to try and motivate people to stand against segregation
- The march began in 1941
- President Roosevelt called it a call for unity in the war effort

The Montgomery Bus Boycott
- The Boycott started in 1955 and ended in 1956
- Rosa parks a women who stood against bus segregation sparked the Black community to stand against these problems
- at the end 90% of the African Americans stood with the boycott and ended up shutting down the bus station

Black Panther Party Founded
- The Black Panther Party would do many things for the African American society they cater free breakfast for children and medical assistance for all
- Because they were armed and would stand up against the police so they were deemed dangerous
- So the FBI mostly raided panther offices and homes

Advocates for Black Nationalism
- Malcolm was the leader of Nation of Islam and was the best preacher that the society had
- "Malcolm X" was taught from Elijah Muhammad in prison
- He wanted the black society to fight back with violence

Regents of the University of California vs Bakke
- minorities had preferential treatment over white students who were equally qualified or more qualified
- This case got all the way up to the supreme court
- Minorities had more benefits then whites in the college

Civil Rights Act of 1968
- Congress finally took action after King's assassination and created the Civil Rights Act of 1968
- Before King's assassination he and the black community joined with realtors and bankers to encourage open housing in Chicago
- Also Before King's death he shifted his focus to economic equality, such as houses, marketing, and etc.

Swann vs Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education
- The government wanted to desegregate schools but only 1.2% of black children went to school in the south
- Took them an extra three years to stop segregation in schools
- The proportion in south schools with minorities was risen to 32%

Watts Riot
- This riot was about poverty, prejudice and police mistreatment
- L.A. exploded with violence
