  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    The French and Indian War was a series of wars that took place on American soil during the Seven Years' War (Known as Nine Years War in the US). The war began when the French and British Empires fought over who owned the rights to the Ohio River Valley for settlement and trade. Was called the French and Indian War because the Indians teamed up with the French. In the end, the British prevailed, but at a very expensive price; to pay off their debt, they imposed taxes onto the colonists .
  • Treaty of 1763

    Treaty of 1763
    This treaty ended the French and Indian/Seven Years' War, the signers were representatives from Great Britain, Germany, France, and Spain, and was signed in Paris. Treaty stated that France were to give Great Britain all mainland east of the Mississippi River (excluding New Orleans). They kept all other land west of the Mississippi.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    Issued by King George III, which followed the transfer of ownership of all land west of the Mississippi River to the French. Did not allow settlement west of the line along the Appalachian Mountain, which was used as an Indian Reserve.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Was used to pay for the British troops stationed in the colonies during the Seven Years' War. Act was set into action without the approval of the colonists. Required that colonists pay taxes on many different forms and variations of paper; taxes were to also be paid in British and not local currency.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Riot of about 50 Boston citizens who gathered and attacked a British sentinel; a British officer called for backup, but they too were attacked. This caused the troops to fire into the crowd of people, wounding 6 and killing 5. Some either dying on the spot, or later on while in transport for medical attention. The people of Boston were outraged and demanded that the soldiers be tried for murder, this later led to the evacuation of British forces from Boston.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Political protest held by angry colonists frustrated with at Britain for putting in place "taxation without representation". Disguised as Native Americans, protesters dumped 342 chests full of tea into the harbor. This was one of the first times that Great Britain realized America wasn't going to back down.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    Also known as "The Coercive Acts", were punishments for the colonists which were put in place by the British parliament for trying to defy them. One act passed called the "Boston Port Bill" stated the harbor were to be closed until the colonists paid back the money from the tea destroyed (almost $1,000,000 if converted to today's value) during the protests.

    Was the first war of the American Revolution, but the British and 13 colonies were having tensions and conflict for years prior to the battles.
