    George Calvert got land (Maryland)
    George Calvert was a Catholic from England. He wanted a safe place for other catholics to go. In 1632 Charles 1 gave him a colony north of Virginia. However, he died before reciving the grant. So his son Cecilius Calvert inherited the colony. It was named Maryland after Henrietta Maria. Today this is important because he took charge of the things he belived should happen just like people today.

    Anne Hutchinson questioned religious veiws (Massachusetts)
    Anne Hutchinson came to Massachusetts in 1634. She begain quesioning the colony's religous authority. When people started to follow her lead she became a threat to the colony. In 1637 she went to trial,Hutchindon claimed God spoke directly to her but Puritans belive God only speaks though the Bible. The accusers found her guilty and ordered her to leave the colony. Anne Hutchinson moved to Rhode Island.Today we have many religious veiws and groups because of people like Anne.

    Thomas Hooker moved to Connecticut
    In 1636 Thomas Hooker was a minister and was not happy with Massachusetts because he didn't like the way Puritans ran the colony. Hooker led his congregation to Connecticut where he founded a town called Hartford. Tree years later Hartford, Windsor, and Wethersfield agreed to form a colony.They made the first written constitution called Fundammental Orders of Connecticut. This connects with today because if Americans don't like the laws they act upon them.

    Governor William Berkeley noticed a conflict between the Native Americans and the settlers. The natives were getting mad because the settlers were taking their land. So to avoid further problems Berkeley made peace with them and promised not to take anymore land. This is still important because Berkeley made peace with other people even though they are different and people today still do this because of people like William Berkeley.

    King Charles 2 created the Carolinas
    King Charles 2 gave the colony to a group of eight members of his court who had helped him keep his throne, Carolina means "Charles land." The carolina proprietors made each of themselfs a scection of land to gain money so colonist could come over from England. Right now North Carolina and South Carolina is still named after him.

    In 1664 the governor Peter Stuyvesant was disliked by the people in New Netherland because he had enforced strict rule and heavy taxes. When the English ships sailed into New Amsterdam Stuyvesant was unprepared and surrendered the colony to England. King Charles 2 takes control of the colony and gives it to his brother Duke of York. Duke of York named it New York. New York has one of largest city in the United States and is still named after Duke of York.

    Nathaniel Bacon was a wealthy young planter who led the western part of Virginia. Bacon was unhappy because he felt the easterners were taking over Virginia. He blamed the easterners on the native attacks and said Jamestown was responsible. Nathaniel Bacon took action in 1676 he raided the Native American villages in western Virginia and he burned the capitial of Jamestown. Currently we have West
    Virginia and Virginia because of Bacon.

    General James Oglethorpe led colonist to get a charter where English debtors (people who are unable to pay a debt) and poor people can get a fresh start. Oglethorpe created and founded Georgia.The event still effects today because people today live in Georgia.

    John Peter Zenger fought for rights
    John Peter Zenger was a writer for New York Weekly Journal and was faced with charges for printing a critical report about the royal goveror of New York. Andrew Hamilton defended Zenger by saying, it was his right for free speech. This event shows how we got our free speech.

    James  Oglethorpe gives up
    In 1751 James Oglethorpe got many complains about the limits on the size of landholdings and the law banning of slave labor. He was referred to as "our perpetual dictator." Oglethorpe grew frustrated by the colonist' complaints and slow growth. He agreed to lift the bands on slavery and rum. Oglethorpe surrendered the colony to the King. This event shows how America likes our freedom and if we have to many laws we will complain.
  • Junipero Serra Founded San Diego

    Junipero Serra Founded San Diego
    Junipero Serra was a Franciscan monk, he lead a mission to Caliornia and founded San Diego. Over the next 15 years he lead eight missions to California along a route called El Camino Real whitch means The Royal Highway. The areas they dicovered grew into large citys such as Los Angeles and Monterey. Serra also worked to prevent the Spanish Army from mistreating the Native Americans. Today those citys still remain.
