    French and Indian War

    The cause of the French and Indian war was because of the disagreement over land. The English colonist wanted to expand west but the French and Indians resisted. The British ended up winning the war and the Treaty of Paris was formed, still causing colonial problems.

    Proclamation of 1763
    The document reserved land west of the Appalachian mountains for Indians, this made it where the colonist couldn't settle in the area.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Parliament passed the Sugar Act. The Sugar Act set a tax on sugar and molasses imported into the colonies to raise revenue for England from the 13 colonies, it was a practice of mercantilism. The sugar act was over in 1765 due to the anger of the colonist.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act was a law passed by Parliament of Great Britain, It was the first tax directly on the colonist. The purpose of the law was to make the colonist pay tax on every paper they used. The colonists believed it was unconstitutional. A group called the Sons Of Liberty was formed and they rebelled against the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act resolves was made in order to find resolutions to the Stamp Act which led to arguments in the House of Burgesses.

    This was a law passed that stated the colonists had to provide the British soldiers with a place to live, food, drink and any other need they would have during the time of war.

    Stamp Act Congress

    The Stamp Act congress consisted of representatives from some of the British colonies in North America and was the first gathering of elected representatives from some of the American colonies. They all met up in New York City. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how aggravated they were with the British taxing them. The result of the meeting was that they made a document stating that colonists had the same right as the Biritish.

    Townshend Act
    Great Britain taxed goods like lead, paper, glass, tea, from England. Writs of assistance was when officers could search any house for smuggled goods to make sure they weren't breaking the act. The tax money was used to pay the salaries of governors and judges so they would remain loyal to Great Britain. The colonists were of course angry.

    The Boston Massacre happened on Kings Street. The British soldiers shot and killed 5 people. It is not known who ordered the soldiers to fire and exactly why they did it.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Sons of Liberty were responsible for the Boston Tea Party. They were protesting from the things being taxed by Great Britain. They boarded three ships in the Boston harbor and threw 342 chests of tea overboard. It resulted in the passage of the Intolerable Acts and pushed the sides closer to war.

    Intolerable Acts
    The colonist were mainly affected by this law. The acts were meant to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. The colonists boycotted and they started the First Continental Congress.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    The Act guaranteed religious freedom for Roman Catholics and restored French civil law. The colonist got further more angry.

    First Continental Congress

    States such as North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, New York, and others met in Philadelphia for the meeting of the First Continental Congress. Founding fathers such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and John Jay attended. The purpose of their meeting was to organize colonial resistance. The congress passed the Articles of Association.

    The battle took place in Boston, the redcoats stormed the hill three times but were forced to retreat. The British won but gave colonists the confidence they could win the war.

    The British troops were after the Colonial weapons. They ran into the Militia. The signifigance of the battles was it was the firsts of the revolution and there was a surprise victory for the British.

    Parliament repealed the Stamp Act and declared that the Declaratory Act gave the right to rule and tax the colonies.

    The author of common sense is Thomas Paine. He argues that we should be independent from Britain. The pamphlet gave people confidence and hope to be independent.

    Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and it was signed on July 1 1776. The document gave American colonies the independence they had been fighting for. The main ideas were to make very colony independent from Great Britain.
