    The Wild Animal and Plant Protection of International and Interprovintial Trade Act is the legislative vehicle by which Canada meets its obligations under The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).It received royal assent on December 17, 1992 and came into force on May 14, 1996. The purpose of WAPPRIITA is to protect Canadian and foreign species of animals and plants that may be at risk of overexploitation due to illegal trade.

    The Environmental Enforcement Act (EEA) amends nine existing acts to ensure more effective enforcement of the laws that protect Canada's national parks, air, land, water, and wildlife. The EEA also creates the Environmental Violations Administrative Monetary Penalties Act (EVAMPA), which sets out a system for administrative monetary penalties, or AMPS, designed to provide an efficient response to violations where there is no need for denunciation and punishment.
