    The Lowell, Mass., textile mills where they worked were considered amazing but for the female workers it was a living hell. they worked 13 hours a day and were in horrible working conditions. because of this they went on strike and signed a petition saying, "We will not go back into the mills to work unless our wages are continued."

    William Green was the second president of the American Federation serving from 1924 to his death in 1952. he began the stray away from the "pure and simple unionism" from the ideas of the first president and started a new politically involved "social reform unionism". He himself was a labor worker born into a coal mining family and started at 16, so he knew how important unionism and the labor rights laws could be to help people.

He provided legal advice to the Steel Workers Organizing Committee in the fight to unionize the industry in the late 1930s. He was also a principal architect for the US collective bargaining system after World War II

    the McKees Rocks Strike took place at the Pressed Steel Car CO. plant where somewhere around 5000-8000 workers created railway cars. several different nationalities were working and because of the language barrier, they were exploited with daily injuries and deaths. Because of this most of them went on strike to be treated fairly and get better pay.
