    Haymaker riot was a breakout between the police and the labor protests in chicago. The workers were protesting to have a shorter work day. Police were there to protect the strike breaker, when a bomb was through into the group of police, killing 7 police and injuring 60 people. The haymaker riot was a strike to make 8 hour work days which has been a lasting effect in the labor movement.

    Thousand of men took strike across five different states, Arkansas, illinois kansas, missouri and texas. The works were saying that it was unsafe working conditions, unfair hours and low pay. The strike was unsuccessful due to other unions not joining. The employer hired nonunion workers to replace the workers on strike. It was made a law where you can not be rejected a job if union.

    Labor organizer Samuel Gomper (early labor leader) set up American Federation of labor. Everyone in the union was a skilled worker. THe AFL was built up off smaller unions.

    Pullman were the maker of the railroad cars, during 1894 they have cut the workers wages by 25%. Lowering them even more than there wages were at. At the time of depression many were already starving. The workers agreed to go on strike, and joined the ARU and the workers refused to drive trains that were attached to the pullmans cars, causing a big problem between the railroads.
