The Great Baltimore Strike
people protested becasue there wages were getting cut for the second time and the workers were furious. Many railways and passenger carriers were shut down for almost a week. Federal troops ended the strike by threatening to srrest everyone. -

Archduke Ferdinand was asasinated
Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were on a trip to Sarajevo. They were driving through the street when Gavrilo Princip stepped out of the crowed and shot him and his wife Sophie dead. -
The Fighting Starts
Germeny invades Belguim after Archduke Franz Derdinand was assasinated. Thousands of civillians fled in terror whil Germans swpt across Belguim. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
The British passenger ship was sunk by the German U-Boats. Thousands of people died 128 of them were Americans. Germany tried to defend there actions but Americans became outraged by this and fought against the Germans in war. -
The Prohibition
During the prohibition alcohol was legally prohibited. People coul not manufature, sell, or drink alcohol. That didnt stop people from drinking it though. People would hide it and conceal it so they would not get caught with it. -
Women in the working world
By the 1920's women had been able to work in several diffent job types. They were working in agriculture, clericle, trade, domestic and so many more! Women were finally starting to make there way into the working world. -
Louis Armstrong and Jazz
At this time in American history there came a new kind of music called Jazz. One man named Louis Armstrong was an amazing jazz player. He became very famous and one of todays best jazz players. -
Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic
Charles Lindbergh made the first non-stop flight across the Atlanic ocean. It took him 33 hours and 22 minutes to complete. Weather conditions were harsh and the seco 1,000 miles he flew at around 100 feet. -
Unemployment skyrockets
During the depression, millions of people lost there jobs and were not able to work. Entire buisneses went under and people where homless and starving. There was no wellfare for people and you had to depend on your own to provide for yourself or your family -
Bank and buisness failure
In 1929, 600 backs closed. By 1933 11,000 of the 25,000 banks had shut down. Because they were not insured, many people lost there money. -
Stock market crash
On this day, the stock market crashed. Panicked inverstors uploaded there stock. Stockes plumeted by 16.4 million, a world record. People who bought stocks on credit where in huge debt and could not pay it back. -
The Nazi's take over Germany
In 1919 Adolf Hitler is appointed the dictatorof Germany. He was t headof te Nazi party and the party had no ties to socialism. He also wanted purification. He wanted people to be blonde hair and blue eyed. The gea depression in America helped the Nazi's become the strongest power by 1932. -
Unification with Austria
Austria wa Germany's firs targt. The majority of Austria's 6 million citizens where German ad were fine with the idea of unification. A day after the unification, it was announced to the world. America and theres of the world did nothing. -
Kristallnacht
On November 9-10 Nazi's stormed onto Jewish owned stroes, synogauges, and and homes. They broke windows and vandalized buildings. Around 100 Jews were killed and 30,000 were arrested. Afterward, the Nazi's blamed the Jews for the destruction -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
Japanese planes Bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. 2,403 Americans were killed and there were about 1,178 injured. The surprise attack had sunked 21 ships, including 8 battleships. More than 300 aircrafts were severaly damaged. -
Dramatic contributions
About 1 million of African American soldiers worked in segregated groups. They were limited to mainly non combat groups. After much protes, the did finally get to see combat. -
D-Day
Just after midnight about 3 divisions parachuted down behind enemy lines. They were followed early morning by thousand of ships and soldiers. This was the largest land-sea-air opperation in history. -
Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Two nuclear bombs were droped on these cities. They were almost completely flattened by the blasts. By the end of both blast about 200,000 people were killed. They were either killed from the blast of radiation poisoning. Japan still did not surrender after the bombs were dropped. -
France in Vietnam
France already had colonies in Vietnam but during the war France had no intention of getting rid of them. France was gaining control of the cities slowly and Vietnam didn't like that. In 1950 America gave 15 million dollars to France to aid them. -

The working class goes to war.
Most of the men fighting in the war were brought in by the Selective Service Act. Most men wanted to find a way around the draft. Some would change where they lived, have sympathetic doctor's grant them a medical condition. Most men joined the coast guard or marines. The best way to get around the draft was to go to college. -
Economy problems
In the mid 1960's the inflation rate was at 2%. In 1969 that ammount more than trippled to 5.5%. The economy was losing money and they needed more. They were only given 6 million dollars.
