    Johann Gutenberg

    Johann Gutenberg is responcible for creating the first movable printing press. Now things could be printed at a faster rate and ship captains could publish their findings for the world to see. Soon after it arrived in America people started to use it to promote colonization.

    Reconquista is a period in time where Christian Kingdoms took over the iberian peninsula from the muslim Moors. The moors were completely defeated in 1492. This bought the entire Iberian peninsula under christian rule.

    treaty of tordesillas

    The pope Alexander the 6th issued a treaty that declared a line approximatley 320 miles west of Cape Verde. The spanish could only explore the land to the west of the line ( the Americas) and the Portugese could only explorate to the East. This treaty led to the exploration of the AMericas by the Spanish.

    Encomienda system
    The Encomienda system was put in place by the spanish in the early 1500's. The system gave the spanish rights to native american people to use as labor in exchange for protection given to the Native americans. The labor helped build communitites and colonize the Americas.

    During the 16th century Europeans tried using the natives as slaves for labor and as well as to rid them of their customs. When this didnt work African slaves were brought to America as part of the spanish explorations. The spanish first brought them over to work in gold mines and sugar plantations. The slaves were a free source of labor and produced much wealth during the colonization of the Americas
  • Roanoke

    Roanoke was the first attempt ever to establish a permanent colony in America. For reasons unknown the colony failed and the colonist were never heard from again.
  • Richard Haklyut

    Haklyut was a member of jamestown and a geographer, In 1589 and 1600 he published The Principle Navigations, Voyages, and Discoveries. The book entailed everything needed to know about voyaging to North American and even how to develop and run a colony.
  • Quebec

    Quebe was founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain. Quebec played a vital role for the colonozing of the Americas. It was one of the first succesful established regions. Natives to the region and the french got along well and traded together. Many people adapted fur trading, fishing and farming.
